Community Consultation: Review of the Health and Physical Education Curriculum Statement

By: Lesley Murrihy | Posted Friday March 4, 2016

This legislation recognises that members of communities have many different views, beliefs and customs; and that these will impact on what people see as important and what they are comfortable with being taught to their children. This legislation acknowledges that people will have strong and perhaps polar opposite views about some aspects of the health curriculum. Therefore, schools are expected to ascertain the views of the school community regarding the way in which the health curriculum should be implemented.

The legislation requires schools to consult with the school community and review the Health Curriculum Statement every two years. We last consulted with the school community at the end of 2013 and so it is time to do it again. Please find below a link to the current Health Curriculum Statement, which I have updated to take account of a few changes to our thinking. Please comment on the doc to let us know that you have read it and please comment on any changes that you would like to see.

Of particular interest, are your thoughts on the Content table under the headings: Mental health, Sexuality, Nutrition and Body Care and Physical Safety. Please check these out and see if there are areas you think have been missed out, but are important; or, areas that you feel strongly should not be included.

Please provide your feedback by using the comment button. If you are not comfortable with this, please feel free to send an email to me (Rachel)  admin@amesbury.school.nz with your thoughts or ask for a paper copy and write your responses on that.

If you are comfortable with the Health Statement as it is, please indicate this also.

Please provide me with any feedback by 5pm, Friday 18March.
