Pōhutukawa Hub Movie Afternoon

Year 10 students in Scots College take part in a community action project, taking action to make a positive contribution to their local community. One of our past students is making their community project about supporting young people with mental health awareness in a fun and enjoyable way. Along with one of his classmates, they are offering a movie afternoon in Pōhutukawa Hub as a way to do this.

The movie afternoon will be held from 3:15 - 5:15pm on Friday next week (9th August) in Pōhutukawa Hub. They will show the movie 'Inside Out', which is about the different emotions people feel, and how it is okay to feel these things. Here is the Common Sense Media review of Inside Out.

The movie afternoon is free to attend, and all year 4-6 students are welcome to come along. Students can stay at school at 3pm, have a quick movement break on the school playground (supervised by Urs) and the movie will start at 3:15pm in Pōhutukawa. At the end of the movie, they will have a fun activity about creating their own emotion. The event will end at 5:15pm. Students will be supervised throughout this time by Urs, supported by a group of Year 10 students.

The Year 10 students will offer small lolly bags and small bottles of fizzy pop at $2 each (one bottle of pop per child!). All profits raised by selling snacks will be donated to the Sir John Kirwan Foundation, supporting mental health awareness for children in Aotearoa New Zealand. The Sir John Kirwan Foundation, founded by former All Black player Sir John Kirwan in 2017, focuses on improving mental health and well-being. It aims to raise awareness, provide support, and reduce the stigma associated with mental health issues, particularly in Aotearoa New Zealand. The foundation offers resources and programs to help individuals ages 5-13 and communities manage mental health challenges, with an emphasis on education as well as wellbeing

The key outcomes the Year 10 students would like to achieve through this event are:

  • Raise awareness of emotions for primary aged children

  • Give them a fun and enjoyable experience, watching a good movie with friends

  • Potentially raise some money for mental health awareness (though this is a secondary outcome and not a key priority)

If you would like your child to attend the movie afternoon, please fill in this short RSVP form. The event finishes at 5:15pm, and we need students to be picked up by a family member at 5:15pm, unless permission has been given to the school for them to walk home. There is a section on the RSVP form for this.

Ngā mihi,

Surya and Sunny (Year 10 students in charge of the project), and Urs Cunningham
