Structured literacy is an approach to teaching reading and writing that is based on scientific research around how our brains work and how we learn to read and write. It is an approach that provides very explicit teaching in a systematic and sequential order.
Koru Hub has been working with a literacy facilitator since the beginning of this year, learning about this approach to literacy learning, and adapting our programmes accordingly. Parents and whānau may well have noticed differences with this, such as the kinds of books coming home and the frequency with which books come home.
Kerri Satherley, from Massey University, is our literacy facilitator. She will run a parent and whānau session from 6-7pm on Monday 9th September. In this session she will explain the thinking and research behind a structured literacy approach, and the different components involved in this learning. She will also show you some of the resources used in this way of learning, such as explaining why reading books taking this approach look a bit different.
The session is free of charge and will be held in the Amesbury School hall. Your tamariki are most welcome to come and hang out and play in Koru Hub while the session is being held. There will be school leaders and staff supervising the tamariki in the hub, and we will have pizza to help keep them going!
