It was an early start for our swimmers on the morning of Friday the 26th of August. On arrival, our students quickly got changed and settled into the seating area awaiting the first race. The pre competition nerves were high but everyone was committed to trying their best. It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to display their skills and determination in front of a big crowd.
The first event was the 25m relay with teams of four representing each school. There was great excitement in the centre as fellow students, teachers and parents cheered and applauded the athletes in the water. Special mention must go to Scarlett who bravely swam two lengths on behalf of her Year 4 girls team.
There were four strokes on display across the course of the races which included freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. Each race was timed allowing for straight finals with the top three finishers qualifying for the Inter Zone competition on the 22nd of September.
Whakamihi (congratulations) to our great students who represented our kura (school) so well both in the water and by the poolside between races. You should all be really proud of yourselves.
We wish the very best of luck to Jiya (Y5) and Yiqi (Y4) who have qualified for the next stage of the competition. Jiya delivered a particularly stellar performance on the day finishing in first place in each of his individual races and stepping up at the last minute to compete in the Y6 boys relay event. Ka mau te wehi, Jiya!
