We ran a wide range of Matariki-themed activities throughout the morning across the school in mixed groups, with older and younger students mixing together to explore different ways of celebrating and learning about Matariki.
There were activities from making stars and manu tukutuku (kites used to signal Matariki), to creating korowai (cloaks), trying raranga (weaving with harakeke) and making kowhaiwhai art. One larger group of students made soup for the whole school to share at lunch time, accompanied by bread rolls. Much grating, peeling and chopping ensued, with Jasper emerging as a food preparation expert!
There was a lot of excitement and discussion around different aspects of Matariki, and we all agreed that the soup was absolutely delicious.
Many thanks to Amaria for organising and overseeing the whole morning, and to all staff members involved. I definitely heard more than one comment from adults involved about getting in more than our fair share of steps in one morning - always a bonus.
We hope that many of you also find some different ways to be involved with celebrating or learning more about Matariki this year.
Warm regards,
The Amesbury team
