Module 2 Inquiry - Planet Earth and Beyond (Part 2)

Last week, students had a wonderful time sharing their learning from our second inquiry with students from the other hubs. Given we were in Alert Level 2, we were, unfortunately, not able to invite parents to join us onsite. In lieu of a live-action learning celebration, each hub has put together a folder of photos from our in-school learning celebration. These are linked to each hubs blurb.

Please continue reading to found out more about what each hub has been doing for the Planet Earth and Beyond inquiry in Term 3.

Koru

This term Koru students moved into small groups for our ourTime projects. Firstly, each group chose an area of interest to research based on what we had already learnt as part of inquiry, Planet Earth and Beyond. This included looking at things like space, weather systems, volcanoes, floating and sinking, flowers, oceans, and planet Earth. Students spent time researching and taking notes on what they learnt. Next, students planned a way to display their discoveries with others. We spent a few weeks creating their projects, completing colourful and detailed 3D creations that students were excited to share with the other hubs. Check out some photos here.

Harakeke

Harakeke's Inquiry started with an exploration into thinking like a scientist. Using these skills, we investigated astronomical systems and how scientists are continually discovering new things about our planet and our solar system. Our focus then moved towards Earth systems and understanding that Earth is designed for humans to survive as well as water, air, rocks, soil and how life forms interact with each other. In this part of the Inquiry we also looked at the impact we have on these systems and learned about sustainable practices. For our ourTime projects, we opted into one area of passion from the following choices: space and planets, Earth systems, and human impact. We formed small groups based on these interests and created a model that demonstrated our knowledge of our chosen topic. You can see our photos here.

Pōhutukawa

Following the general exploration of planet earth and beyond, earth systems, and sustainability, ākonga (students) were able to choose one of the 3 main topics to explore in more detail. Some of our students chose to focus on specific planets or star clusters, while others focused on one of the earth systems or how to sustainably protect them. Once they had chosen their topic, students were able to form small groups with peers who had shared interests. The groups worked together to generate questions that they had relating to their topic and conduct research to find their answers and develop their understanding.

Then came time to create! Our students worked together with their small groups to design and create a project that demonstrated their understanding of their topic. Some groups decided to create dioramas using a wide range of recycled materials gathered from home and school. Other groups worked together to create science boards containing a wide range of information about their topic. It was wonderful to see the curiosity that our students showed throughout this inquiry and the collaboration that was on display when they were working with their groups. We have attached some photos here of our ākonga with their projects.
