The aim of the Year 0-2 EOTC week was to connect with others and help one another, just like in a tuakana-teina relationship, where older or more experienced ākonga(learners) guide and support others. Here’s a glimpse into our adventures:
Exploring at Island Bay Marine Centre and Te Papa
We got to discover the wonders of the sea and learn about marine life at the Island Bay Marine Centre. The Bait House Aquarium was a real highlight! We held all sorts of fascinating sea creatures, including octopuses, seahorses, and lobsters, just to name a few. Meanwhile, others explored fascinating exhibits and treasures at Te Papa.
Our ākonga excitedly shared what they loved most about this day:
Touching the animals was cool; touching the starfish; letting the starfish go on our arms; finding the egg at Te Papa; drawing a massive wave at Te Papa; the earthquake house; and the nature walk.

Junior Sports Carnival
One of the most exciting events of the week was our Sports Carnival. The ākonga got to rotate around a number of fun activities, such as hurdles (some ākonga chose to army crawl under them or do cartwheels over them), the ball-and-spoon race, a hula hoop competition, sprints, bowling, and so much more. There was laughter and excitement as everyone gave their best effort and tried new challenges! See if you can spot some of our kaiako (teachers) joining the fun.

Sports Fun at Ākau Tangi Sports Centre
At the sports centre in Kilbirnie, we rotated through five exciting activities: gymnastics, futsal, floorball, netball, and the super-fun inflatables! It was great to try new things and cheer each other on as we practiced teamwork and gave everything a go.
Here’s what our ākonga enjoyed the most about their time at the sports centre:
We loved the futsal because we got to dribble the ball; the bouncy castle because it was bouncy; playing the game in floorball called ‘clean your room’; gymnastics because we got to do backward and forwards rolls; and going on the beam.

Surprise Drive-In Movie at School
To end the week, we had a surprise treat—a drive-in movie! We decorated our own cardboard cars to “drive” into one of the movie sessions. The choices were Turbo, Inside Out, Finding Dory, and The Lion King. It was such a cool way to wrap up the week with lots of laughs.
For the Drive-In Movie our ākonga had so much fun, and these are some of their highlights:
We liked it when we got to park our cars in the movie, although some of us crashed! Painting our boxes was so much fun. Some of us made race cars, Lamborghinis, cat cars, and even a Pikachu.

It was an unforgettable week filled with fun, learning, and new friendships. We can’t wait for the next adventure together!
