Glass doors in our buildings need some form of design on them as a safety feature to enable people to recognise that they are glass. In our current buildings, this safety feature takes the form of small white circles across the glass. However, in our new building we have worked with students to design small artworks that represent different cultures and aspects of importance to our community.
Vanessa Shilston, a former kaiako (teacher) at Amesbury School, is also an artist, and she worked with groups of students in 2020 who volunteered to work on the art projects. Vanessa has continued working on our window designs throughout the first half of this year to create window designs that will be placed along the glass doors on our breakout spaces in the new hub. She has remained very faithful to the designs created by ngā ākonga (our students), enhancing them where necessary to ensure the designs are clear and will work well as artistic strips across the middle of the windows and doors.

The designs are looking fabulous so far, and we are very pleased with the thought, care and attention to detail that has gone into them by Vanessa and our tamariki. We think they will make our new building truly unique to our kura (school) and our community.
