Due to the many constraints of COVID-19, we now expect the new hub building to be completed in May 2023. We understand that our community is excited to occupy the new teaching spaces and resume normal use of the school hall as soon as possible. It will be a beautiful space for our tamariki and our wider community, and whilst it is disappointing that we will have to wait a little longer yet, we know it will be worth the wait. Like many sectors, the building industry is experiencing a shortage of skilled and experienced labourers due the borders closure. Combined with the lack of materials available we have lost precious time in the project development.
COVID-19 has impacted the project from the start, but it is not the only contributor. With what feels like Wellington’s wettest winter, we have lost time to wind, rain and storms resulting in the build not reaching weather tightness before the winter months. This led to a longer timeframe in laying the concrete and getting works out of the ground.
Although we are not where we want to be in the project, we have almost completed most of the work to make the building weather tight. Once the roof is installed, we will be able to progress with construction regardless of the weather. The onsite contractors have proactively pre-ordered the materials we will need and are storing off site to be prepared for the next stages.
The project team is working hard to deliver the central hub building and will continue with this enthusiasm until the build is complete. They are working well with the school and keeping us well informed of how the project is going.
We have added some pictures of the construction process to share with you the visible development of the building since February 2022 to now. As always, we will continue to share with you updates at each step of the project. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate through the challenges this will bring.
