Garden to Table in Term 2

We are excited to cooperate with Garden to Table at Amesbury and are looking to get the community involved as we grow.

This term, a small team of us have been working behind the scenes to learn and plan for our garden and kitchen programme, which will we will be piloting for all Year 4 students next term. The weekly Tuesday sessions from 11.30am-12.50pm will include: growing, harvesting, preparing and sharing a meal. Students will develop practical life skills and hands on awareness for sustainability. Skills and concepts covered will be authentically linked to a wide range of elements in the curriculum. This ties in beautifully as we are continuing to answer our inquiry question of How Does the World Work?

We will find ways for all tamariki to get involved next term with our garden as we learn about and establish a compost system and maintain a worm farm. All students will be involved in learning about garden ecosystems and what they need to thrive. By the end of the term we will have all done some planting of seeds and contributed in some way to our garden.

We have already had some generous donations to our programme from members of our school and wider community. 

• A huge thank you you to Lynette (grandmother to Nia, Jade and Talia) for donating two worm farms and various gardening equipment. 
• The Churton Park Garden Group have also reached out and made a generous donation to help us to purchase some tools and equipment to get our garden up and running. 
• Wellington City Council has donated a great deal of compost which will go onto into our existing garden beds to improve the soil. 
• New World, Churton Park donated a Vegepod which Brian has assembled and we will use to grow our seedlings. 
• Finally, we received a box of seedlings (about 100 plants) from Zealandia Horticulture which will give our garden a great boost as we get started.

For our garden to flourish, we need the help of everyone in our Amesbury Community. We are now looking for parents, grandparents, older siblings, or any other family members with an interest in gardening or cooking to support us during sessions.
